About us

The Company

KI-KELAG International GmbH pools the international activities of the Kelag Group in the fields of hydropower, wind power and photovoltaics and energy trading abroad.

KELAG-Kärntner Energie-Aktiengesellschaft is one of Austria’s leading energy service providers with an investment focus on electricity generation in Carinthia. Since 2009, the Group and its subsidiary Kelag International have been investing in the gradual expansion of the company’s own power generation in Southeastern Europe in order to exploit economic potential in neighbouring countries.

Renewable energy in Southeastern Europe

In Southeastern Europe, Kelag International is aiming for selective growth in the hydropower, wind power and photovoltaics segments. Due to their geographical proximity and usable potential, the focus is on Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania and Bulgaria. For the development of its own projects and in M&A activities, Kelag International is investing particularly in projects with an output of up to 30 MW.

As of 2018, Kelag International has a total of 13 hydropower plants in operation in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo with a total installed capacity of around 50 MW and an annual generation of around 185 GWh. The Medna small hydropower plant was completed and commissioned in Bosnia-Herzegovina in March 2018. In addition, another small hydropower plant with an output of around 6.5 MW is currently under construction in Montenegro. A few smaller PV plants with a total installed capacity of around 4 MW are operated in Slovenia. In addition, Kelag International operates 5 wind power projects in Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. In total, the subsidiary company currently accounts for around 10 percent of the Kelag Group’s total energy production.

The Management


Dr. Christian Schwarz


Christian Schwarz joined Kelag in 2003 and since then has held several managerial positions within the group. Being an authorized officer at Kelag since 2015, he is responsible for the group-wide Corporate Development/M&A/International Business as well as for the Energy Trading Business. Since the foundation of Kelag International and the acquisition of Interenergo doo in 2009, he has served as a managing director for these companies. As of 2020, Christian Schwarz is a member of Interenergo’s supervisory board.


DI Ingo Preiss


Ingo Preiss has worked for Kelag since 2004 and has been entrusted with project management in many hydropower projects at home and abroad. Since the foundation of Kelag International in 2009, he has been significantly involved in the development of new business fields in Southeastern Europe. Within the scope of this employment, he is managing director of the subsidiary in Kosovo and authorized signatory of Interenergo d.o.o. in Slovenia. Within the Kelag Group, Ingo Preiss is head of power plant planning in the Generation/Technical Services division. In April 2017, he was appointed Technical Managing Director of Kelag International.


DI Dr. Bernd Neuner


Bernd Neuner has worked for Kelag since 2008 and has supervised the development and expansion of international business activities from the very beginning. In particular, he has been internationally responsible for development of the wind power business segment. Within the scope of this position, he is member of the supervisory board of Interenergo doo. Bernd Neuner has been responsible for Business Development/M&A/International Affairs within the Group since 2015. He was appointed Commercial Managing Director of Kelag International in April 2017.

In addition to expanding the use of renewable energy sources at home and abroad, Kelag focuses on activities for sustainably improving energy efficiency. They include energy efficiency or energy management solutions such as photovoltaics, smart metering and smart homes. Kelag is also involved in the strategic development fields of e-mobility and broadband/fibre optics.
